President Obama’s legacy will continue where he started in Chicago at the Obama Presidential Center. The OPC library and museum will display many of his great accomplishments and contributions to history and our society.
When the doors open, will the library share with the general public the mistreatment and disrespect he received as sitting president? I am not just talking about from people who didn’t agree with his politics but from members of Congress, heads of states and elected officials.
I wonder, has any other President been shown such disrespect or are we in an era where the standards are so low that disrespecting the man with the highest power in our country is acceptable?
Some people proudly display their disrespect towards our 44th President, others mask it with a smile. Nonetheless; it should be documented to show how no other President has been disrespected like he has and yet, no other President has faced the extraordinarily complex achievements he has.
Let’s start with his citizenship…in 2008 the media birthed allegations with no evidence or proof that Barack Obama was not born in Hawaii, but in Kenya. Let us pretend that to be, even if President Obama had been born in Kenya, his mother is American and generally that makes him a U.S. citizen. You would think that bit of common sense should automatically discredit the rumors, it continued for almost 3 years and in 2011, the White House released the original long-form of Barack Obama’s birth certificate hoping to put the citizenship rumors to rest. Ironically Donald Trump, who often pressured President Obama to release the certificate took credit and said, “I feel I’ve accomplished something really, really important.” When has any other president had to prove they were U.S. citizens? I wonder if people forget Hawaii is part of the U.S.?
Some Tea Party tea….. does anyone remember the racist email from California GOP official Marilyn Davenport? The email she shared was an altered image of Obama as a chimpanzee with two older chimpanzee “parents.” Not only did she offend Obama she also offended her party. Scott Baugh, the chairman of the Republican Party of Orange County, advocated for her resignation. She later kind of apologized but refused to resign. According to ABC NEWS Davenport stated “I simply found it amusing regarding the character of Obama and all the questions surrounding his origin of birth.” But she added, “We all know a double standard applies regarding THIS president. I received plenty of emails about George Bush that I didn’t particularly like, yet there was no ‘cry’ in the media about them.”
Their statement defending its cartoon…..
“The cartoon is a clear parody of a current news event, to wit the shooting of a violent chimpanzee in Connecticut. It broadly mocks Washington’s efforts to revive the economy.
If they say so….
What about that time in 2009, only 9 months into his 1st term during a joint session of Congress where he aimed at saving the health-care reform, Rep. Joe Wilson (R-SC) disgracefully interrupted and yelled, “You lie!” The outburst prompted a House vote to reprimand him. Wilson called the White House to apologize, and said in a statement his flare-up was “inappropriate and regrettable.”
A picture is worth a thousand words, let’s not forget in 2012 when Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer welcomed Obama on the tarmac by pointing her finger in his face. Brewer defended her actions claiming she didn’t think she was disrespectful and that President Obama was “thin-skinned.”
A bit more Tea Party tea shall we? Since 1962 the debt ceiling has been raised 69 times, but when President Obama in 2011 wanted to raise the debt ceiling – somehow a new precedent was suddenly set with regard raising the debt ceiling. Interesting….
Remember when Speaker of the House John Boehner refused the President’s date to speak to a joint session on jobs in September 2011, when in history has a U.S. President requested a date to address Congress and it was refused?
Representative Paul Gosar (R-Ariz.) has always been vocal about his dislike for President Obama, he even goes as far as posting stories on his public facebook about erasing Obama’s legacy from history.
The United States of America one nation, indivisible…well except when it comes to foreign policy and nuclear deals. In 2015, 47 Republican Senators wrote an open letter to the leaders of Iran practically undercutting the President and declaring that any agreement without legislative approval could be reversed by the next president “with the stroke of a pen.”
Disrespect is one thing, but talk about throwing salt in the game and totally undermining the power of the President by sending a partisan letter to a foreign government.
That seems a bit dangerous or “enemy of the state-ish….”
If he is not the greatest President, he is definitely one of the greats – I just wonder why we tolerate so much hate and disrespect towards our leader? My thoughts are not to highlight hate but to highlight how hate creates history and history cannot be erased.
Feel free to leave your thoughts this is an open post.
