It’s back to school time for college students and each time around this year I get nostalgic about my college days, particularly my freshman year. I will never forget the excitement that came along with my first taste of “independence”. When you first arrive at school you quickly learn that there are rules, both official and unspoken that every freshman must know, particularly female students. When I was in school freshman girls were also called “freshmeat” by upperclassman who preyed on young and naive girls, many who had never experienced life outside their parent’s house.
While these things are mainly whispered about behind dorm room doors, some freshman students at Old Dominion University were met with a blatant message about what awaited students, particularly female students. Signs were draped over the balcony of an off campus house with messages like “Freshman Daughter Drop Off” and “Go Ahead and Drop Off Mom Too”.

Some members of the school’s Sigma Nu chapter live in the home and may have been involved, leading to the chapter’s suspension at the school. The school’s administration and it’s Student Government Association have all come out condemning the messages.
So what do you think? Is this just a case of people overreacting to some stupid college shenanigans or is this incident perpetuating college rape culture?
