Jay Z, Will Smith Producing An Emmett Till Miniseries

Will Smith and Jay Z  produced last year’s Annie, starring Jamie Foxx, and now they are teaming up again. The pair, along with Jay Brown, James Lassiter, and Aaron Kaplan are executive producing an untitled miniseries about Emmett Till for HBO. The untitled mini is described as an immersive and in-depth exploration of the Emmett Till story.

Emmett Till was only 14 when the black teen was brutally murdered after allegedly flirting with a white woman in Mississippi in 1955. The tragic story that galvanized the emerging Civil Rights Movement.

PBS produced a 2003 documentary called The Murder of Emmett Till that investigated the situation.

Jay-Z and his partner Jay Brown of Roc Nation, Smith and James Lassiter of Overbrook Entertainment and Kaplan of Kapital Entertainment. There are currently no writers attached to the miniseries.

I think this will help young people understand the importance of history. It shows younger generations why the elders are so hard on them. What it does is remind everyone that we’ve come far, but not far enough.
