Fordham University Caves In To Public Scrutiny, Revokes Bill Cosby’s Honorary Degree, During The Pope’s Visit To New York City.
For those who do not know Fordham University is a prestigious Catholic university in New York
Fordham University alumni, attorney John P. Schmitt who represents Bill Cosby addressed Fordham University rescission of their honorary degree that was bestowed upon Bill Cosby.
In the letter attorney and alumni John P. Schmitt addresses Fordham University’s President Rev. Joseph McShane, S.J. calling his statement irresponsible, egregious, and inexcusable — specifically the attorney writes, that the school mischaracterized Mr. Cosby deposition testimony, claiming that Cosby admitted and confirmed that he was willing to drug and rape women for his sexual gratification — and according to the attorney who sat in the 2005 deposition Bill Cosby never admitted in his testimony to any nonconsensual sexual contact with any woman and or drugging of anyone —- Bill Cosby has always maintained his innocence before and after the recent release of his sealed deposition.
Nothing in the single deposition recently released lends any support to, much less “confirms,” any such allegations. Nothing in his testimony admits to any nonconsensual sexual contact with any woman whatsoever. As you know, Mr. Cosby has been convicted of no crime and has steadfastly maintained his innocence. And yet the trustees felt entitled to sit in judgment and to announce that judgment with rhetorical flourish that is itself beyond the pale and worthy of condemnation.
Furthermore, Schmitt ends the letter by stating
“To make matters worse, your statement goes on: “Equally appalling is his longtime strategy of denigrating the reputations of women who accused him of such actions.” This unfounded assertion seems intended to lend gratuitous support to defamation lawsuits that are presently underway and in which the issues are hotly contested. There is absolutely no justification for Fordham to insert itself into those lawsuits. I note that the statement is devoid of any reference to the Cosby’ s financial support over a dozen years, through the Ennis William Cosby Foundation, of the University’s efforts to train teachers of students with learning differences.
Nowhere in the statement does Fordham University mention the tremendous amount of financial support received from the Cosby’s and or The Ennis William Cosby Foundation.
After the murder of the Cosby’s only son, Ennis in 1997, The Cosby’s founded The Ennis William Cosby Foundation.
Ennis Cosby, was a teacher, who took pride in helping children with special needs; because he had suffered from dyslexia. This foundation was dedicated to training teachers to work with students who had learning disabilities. Ennis was fondly remembered for his greeting “Hello, Friend!” he wanted others not to ever feel left out, like he sometimes did because of his learning disability —
While the school has no problem keeping money that was donated by the Cosby’s — the University has sent a message loud and clear to the Bill Cosby and his family, the message is we will keep your money but “Goodbye, Friend!!”
